Updating the food court in this suburban mall gave us the opportunity to introduce a gardening theme a world away from the post-industrial environment in the vicinity of the asset. Solely for the purpose of creating a green refuge, we created a herb garden, with the intention that the (real) plants could take advantage of the abundent natural light and gradually take control of the internal architecture.
We envisage fruit boxes, swings and padded benches, all surrounded by plants, some of which can be picked and added to enhance the food bought at the adjacent bars.
Within this relatively small space, we have provided for families, children - both big and small - and for more formal business meetings.
